This shrunken-down Surface is growing on me

id=”cnetReview” section=”rvwBody” data-component=”indepthReview”> The small-scale Surface Go from Microsoft recasts the larger Surface Pro two-in-one as a casual computer you can toss in a bag and take anywhere. But, the change in size, price and processing power presents a lot of questions for would-be buyers. To answer the most pressing ones:

Yes, the new Surface Go can still run many everyday PC tasks, even with only an Intel Pentium processor. No, it’s not likely going to satisfy as your all-day, everyday workhorse computer, both because of the limited horsepower and the small size. Yes, it’s significantly less expensive than the bigger Surface Pro, and closer in price to an iPad ($414 at Amazon). No, it’s not going to save you much at the end of the day, as the must-have keyboard cover and other accessories are still sold separately (and priced on the high side).

Editor’s note: This review has been updated with new benchmark results and a final rating.

View full gallery Sarah Tew/CNET The Surface Go starts at a reasonable $399 (£379 or AU$599). But once you add a $99-to-$129 keyboard cover, a $99 stylus and maybe an extra $150 to double the RAM and storage space to mainstream laptop levels (from 4GB/64GB to 8GB/128GB), you’re looking at a much bigger investment.

But despite not being the bargain Surface you might have been hoping for, it’s hard not to like this little two-in-one Windows hybrid. The smaller size works surprisingly well, both for the 10-inch, 1,800×1,200-pixel display and the clip-on keyboard, which manages to shrink down individual keys without overly compromising the overall typing experience.

It helps that the touchpad built into the keyboard cover is huge for such a small device. And that familiar touchpad and cursor interface works seamlessly with — or instead of — the touchscreen, giving you exactly the sort of flexibility lacking in the iPad or other non-Windows tablets. For example, I was recently able to take the Surface Go to a press event and use it as my main on-site PC, with its small size and light weight as major plusses. I was slightly concerned about battery life, being as I’d be using the Surface Go for several hours of intensive writing, emailing, social media posting and live-chatting through Slack, but it held up just fine, and I didn’t feel like I was missing much by leaving my full-size laptop at home.

The biggest question about the Surface Go was how it would perform as a Windows 10 ($134 at Amazon) machine. That’s because it swaps the usual Core i-series Intel CPUs for lower-end Pentium processors, which are typically only found in laptops at the budget end of the spectrum (it’s a favorite for Black Friday doorbusters, for example).

View full gallery Sarah Tew/CNET It’s a definite step down in processing power, but the potential silver lining is that for most of what people do on their PCs today — websurfing, media playback, and using online tools and services — there’s not too much of an experiential difference. At least if you don’t run too many apps at once or keep 20 browser tabs open.

That may be one of the reasons behind shipping the device with Windows 10 S, the Windows variant that restricts you to apps from the official Microsoft app store, supposedly all in the name of security. It’s always been a bit of a head-scratcher as an OS, but fortunately it’s easy and painless to switch to regular full-blown Windows 10 at no extra cost. It just takes a few button-clicks and then you can install the Chrome browser, the Windows Amazon Kindle app, or anything else, providing it can run on a Pentium CPU. I can’t imagine any Surface Go purchaser not doing that immediately.

If the idea of a smaller, less expensive, low-power Surface sounds oddly familiar, that’s because it’s been tried before. The closest comparison is the single-name Surface 3 (as in the non-Pro version), which was a 10-inch variant released in 2015 with an Intel Atom processor. At the time, I referred to it as “trickle-down computing,” and said it wasn’t powerful enough to be your full-time computer.

Project xCloud’s first public trial hits Android devices in October

-text c-gray-1″ >Microsoft’s game-streaming service, Project xCloud, will enter the public domain for the first time in October. Players in the United States, United Kingdom and South Korea will be able to enjoy AAA titles on their smartphones, tablets and other screen-based devices. However, the preview comes with a few caveats.

First, this isn’t the console streaming that Microsoft promised players at E3 2019. In theory, that service will allow folks to stream games from their own Xboxes to their mobile devices, essentially giving each player a personal xCloud server. It’s a feature that sets xCloud apart from its streaming competitors, most notably Google Stadia. Microsoft previously said the xCloud console-streaming trial would launch in October, and those plans are still on track, but that’s not what today’s announcement is about. Instead, the company is throwing its standard, Azure-based game-streaming service live and planning to launch public tests for the console component later this year.

Second, the xCloud public preview is open only to Android owners. There are no concrete plans to bring xCloud to iOS devices, though a Microsoft spokesperson told Engadget the company is working on it.

“We’re excited about partnering with Android partners in the early phases of our public preview and are working closely with others in the industry to bring game streaming to a wide variety of devices with a screen and internet connection,” the spokesperson said. “We’ll have more to share about bringing Project xCloud to other platforms at a later date.”

The xCloud public preview is open only to Android owners.Specifically, anyone who wants to participate in the xCloud preview will need a phone or tablet running Android 6.0 or better with Bluetooth 4.0, plus a wireless, Bluetooth-enabled Xbox One gamepad. The service launches with four games: Halo 5: Guardians, Gears 5, Killer Instinct and Sea of Thieves. These will be available for free during the preview. Players in the US and UK can sign up for the public trial here.

The preview will roll out in stages, beginning with a contained number of players and adding more as it continues over the coming months — and maybe even years. Microsoft hasn’t provided a timeline for the public test, saying it will last until xCloud consistently works and the technology is stable.

This will likely take a while. Streaming relies on Wi-Fi and mobile networks, and while internet infrastructure is ever-expanding, it’s far from ubiquitous, even in the US. In February, the FCC estimated 25 million people in the country didn’t have access to broadband, but that figure is much higher in practice. Microsoft published a blog post in April with its own estimates that counted folks without broadband access and those who don’t use the internet at broadband speeds. That figure came out to 163 million people in the US, many of them located in rural regions.

Connectivity is a core aspect of multiple Microsoft business models, so it’s no surprise the company is fighting against the digital divide. For instance, the Microsoft Airband Initiative aims to expand rural broadband access to more than 3 million people by 2022, and the company is simultaneously partnering with regional ISPs to roll out high-speed internet in underserved areas.

Meanwhile, 5G is in its infancy. As the backbone of any mobile game-streaming effort, 5G will play an important role in the evolution of services like xCloud and Google Stadia. But, for now, it’s not widely available. For instance, Verizon plans to have 5G in 30 cities by the end of the year — but it’s not exactly coast-to-coast coverage. In the UK, 5G coverage is even more sparse.

“Our focus is on delivering a great experience at the lowest possible bandwidth. If you cherished this informative article along with you desire to receive guidance relating to MS-900 exam questions generously check out our own internet site. “”Our focus is on delivering a great experience at the lowest possible bandwidth needed wherever users are,” Microsoft’s spokesperson said. “The Project xCloud preview will work over either a Wi-Fi or any mobile network in your area (4G LTE or 5G) that supports 10Mbps-down bandwidth, similar to streaming video. We’ll continue to work with mobile carriers and ISPs to improve the technology, and garner feedback from participants to better understand their experience.”

Microsoft is partnering with T-Mobile in the US, Vodafone in the UK and SK Telekom in Korea for its xCloud debut. It calls these “technical partnerships” that will allow developers to learn more about player behavior and infrastructure limitations. Players with any carrier in the US and UK can participate in the preview, while the Korea test is limited to SK Telecom customers at first.

As it turns out, 2019 is the year that game streaming finally gets a fighting chance. Though broadband and mobile connectivity may not be perfectly established across the globe, major companies including Google, Microsoft, Amazon, EA and NVIDIA are attempting to shift gaming’s foundation to the cloud. Google and Microsoft, in particular, have the tools to make it happen, with servers positioned across the globe and robust cloud networks of their own. However, connectivity overall may still be unstable enough to make game streaming more frustrating than fun.

Let the public trials begin.

Update 9/24 7:20pm ET: Microsoft’s plans to launch console-streaming capabilities in October are still on track, a spokesperson clarified. The second paragraph has been updated with this information.

Microsoft Dynamics GP 7.5, 9.0 version update notes

When talking about Corporate ERP application upgrade, it is always a good idea to check with your Microsoft Dynamics GP Partner, as time is going on and new versions or Service packs should or could be released, this article is intended to give you the idea about the steps and provide some initial comfort level on Great Plains version upgrade decision making.

Upgrade is possible for all Great Plains versions, including Great Plains Accounting for DOS and Windows (if this is your case or if you are on Great Plains Dynamics on Pervasive SQL 2000/Btrieve or Ctree/Faircom, please review our earlier publications), however in this article we will concentrate on Microsoft Dynamics GP version 7.5, 8.0 and 9.0 upgrade to Dynamics GP 10.0 (current version as of December 2009, new version Microsoft Dynamics GP 11.0 should be released in May 2010)

1. Microsoft Great Plains 7.5 upgrade.  This version was renamed (or possibly to say rebranded) into Microsoft Dynamics GP 7.5.  If you install it from original CD – it will be named as Microsoft Business Solutions Great Plains.  if you are MBS Great Plains 7.5, there are two ways to update to Dynamics GP 10.0, where both have two steps.

First way (we recommend it as Dynamics GP 9.0 is still supported by Microsoft Business Solutions and you can see more recent service packs, supposedly fixing problems with upgrade).  Second way is upgrade to Microsoft Dynamics GP 8.0 first and then apply GP 8.0 SP 4.0 (MBS is no longer supporting Dynamics GP version 8.0, and some of the upgrade fixes might not be reflected in abandoned Dynamics GP 8.0 version and its service packs).

And Second step is to upgrade from Dynamics GP 9.0 (or 8.0) to GP 10.0.  Please, note that you cannot just insert Dynamics GP 10.0 CD1 (without incorporated Service packs), first step is to install Dynamics GP workstation from SD1 of GP10.0 and then apply Service Pack (4 or 3).

Please, note that Microsoft Dynamics GP 10.0 has new security model, based on Security Roles, security conversion was successfully implemented with Dynamics GP 10.0 Service Pack 1 (we are a bit conservative and would like to say, that there were issues up to Dynamics GP 10.0 Service Pack 3)

2. Microsoft Dynamics GP 8.0 upgrade.  If you are already on Microsoft Dynamics GP version 8.0, you will need just one step to get updated to GP version 10.0.  Dynamics GP 10.0 with Service Pack 3 DVD should do the job (available to download from MSDN or your Partner or Customer Source).

There is no need for you to upgrade to Dynamics GP 9.0, as you can go directly to Microsoft Dynamics GP 10.0

3. Upgrading from Microsoft Dynamics GP 9.0 to 10.0.  This upgrade is especially sensitive to Service Packs.  Do not expect simply to insert GP 10.0 CD1 into DC drive and begin upgrade process – upgrade requires Service Packs matching list for GP 9.0 and for GP 10. In case you loved this information and you would like to receive more details relating to MS-900 exam questions generously visit our own internet site. 0.

In this article we would like to share with you one substantial Microsoft Dynamics GP 10.0 upgrade issue, when you are downloading Dynamics GP 10.0 DVD with Service Pack 3 incorporated**ISSUE RESOLVED**This issue is resolved with Microsoft Dynamics GP 10.0 Service Pack 4.

Install Service Pack 4 prior to launching Microsoft Dynamics GP 10.0 Utilities for the update to resolve the issue. Click HERE to download Service Pack 4.

If you are updating from Microsoft Dynamics GP 9.0 with version 9.00.0337 or later and using Microsoft SQL Server 2000, the SEE30303 table will fail with the error “[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Line 1: Incorrect syntax near ‘(‘.” This table is for the Historical Inventory Trial Balance (HITB) product.

Even if you do not use the product, the update will fail as it is installed by default.  This issue will be addressed in an upcoming service pack.  Refer to the workaround steps below:

a. Do not restore the company database.  Leave the company database at the failed state.b. Close Microsoft Dynamics GP 10.0 Utilities.c. Run the following script in Query Analyzer:

UPDATE DYNAMICS..DU000030 set Status = 0, errornum=0 where fileNumber = 1 and PRODID = 5597

d. Run the following script in Query Analyzer to create the required index on the SEE30303 table:

CREATE UNIQUE CLUSTERED INDEX [AK5SEE30303] ON [dbo].[SEE30303] ( [GLPOSTDT] ASC, [ITEMNMBR] ASC, [QTYTYPE] ASC,[SEQNUMBR] ASC )

By the way, the issue above is reported to be resolved in Microsoft Dynamics GP Service Pack 4
